After the death of Joan, Burroughs was released with a fine as it was believed to be a foolish accident.
Earlier in !944 a friend of the beats 19 year old Columbia student Lucien Carr murdered 31 year old English lecturer David Kammerer stabbing and then sinking his body into the Hudson river.
Burroughs was a material witness and with impending drug charges he fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution and Angola Prison.
