“As a child I thought films dropped out of the sky “
CINEMAMA begins with a reference to Etienne Jules Marey’s cinematographic study “Falling Cat” (1895), linking cats to secret and sensual interior worlds while questioning the filmmaker’s experience as a mother and filmmaker and the gravity of disillusion
Years later while recording a young girl singing Let it Go from Disney’s film Frozen, she is interrupted, Look cat! And her vitality and nature take the filmmaker back to innocent beginnings and wonder at the world viewed.
The film serves as a condensed expression of the filmmaker’s love for cinema, examining how the medium exists within us as an ultimate chamber where the hope and ghost of an interior history circulate. It explores the tension between the impulse to design and control and the impulse to let things go.
